Year 5 Spanish Work

AUTUMN TERM 2015
This term Eagles and Kestrels have been working hard to develop their knowledge of bigger numbers (to 31!) and the months of the year to help them ask and answer a variety of questions about birthdays, dates and ages.

THE DAY OF THE DEAD
To develop their cultural understanding this term, we have been leanring about the Mexican festival of 'El Dia de Los Muertos'.

Click on the image below to watch the video we shared to learn about customs and traditions.

The children were fascinated to learn about the tradition of  decorating homes with skulls and skeletons to honor and remember family members who have passed away.

DICTIONARY SKILLS
During our topic on The Weather, Year 5 children have been developing their dictionary skills to find out how to say different nations and nationalities in Spanish.
The children enjoyed completing a survey of birthdays in the classroom and have improved in their ability to answer questions with not just one word answers, but complete sentences.
We had a go at decorating our own 'calaveras' (skulls) to mirror the tradition of making the festival at ime of joy rather than sadness. Don't they look great?
In addition, Kestrels designed their own 'Altar de Muertos' to show how Mexicans would decorate a table in their house to remember the deceased.
They then used this knowledge to create their own weather forecasts from around the world...It's hard to remember everything, but we're getting much better at writing whole sentences!!
SPRING TERM 2016

LAS FORMAS

This term Year 5 have been developing their grammatical knowledge of combining nouns and adjectives by learning about shapes, position and colours.

RETRATOS (2)

To consolidate their knowledge of adjective agreement & the use of different verb forms - Tengo (I have), Tienes (you have), Tiene (he/she has), Year 5 have loved developing their ability to describe people, with reference to their hair style and eye colour.

We looked at some paintings by the Spanish painter Joan Miro, and then had a go at creating and describing our own.We still need to work on remembering all the grammatical details (it's tricky to remember them all!) but we had a good go at writing these descriptions from memory!

 Joan Miro

¿Quién es?

We played a Spanish version of 'Guess Who' to practise asking and answering questions about what people look like and then created our own 'Se Busca' (wanted) Posters to help capture cartoon criminals in Spanish. Don't they look great?!

SUMMER TERM 2016

During the summer, the children have been working hard on developing their use of bilingual dctionaries - an important skill to have when learning a language. We have been looking at how the dictionaries are ordered (usually Spanish to English first and then English to Spanish) and the meaning of the abbreviations that we found; m/f = masculine or feminine, sg/pl = singular plural. We also discovered that unless you have a really big dictionary, some words just aren't in the dictionary, so we learnt how to use web-based dictionaries too, like https://translate.google.co.uk/ and http://www.wordreference.com/ to translate those 'tricky' words. The children are getting much better at remembering whether words are el/la/los/las and using this definite article in their writing.

LOS DEPORTES

We used our dictionary skills to develop our knowledge of sporting pastimes in Spanish and conducted surveys to find out which sports our friends liked or disliked. We learnt to recognise whether sports are used with the verb 'jugar' (to play) or 'practicar' (to do/practise) and then put all of our language together to read, understand and write our own texts about the activities that we and others do on different days of the week.

Finally this term we have also been trying to remember all the topics we have learnt over the last year. The children currently have the challenge of working towards asking, understanding and answering 20 questions correctly and independently in Spanish! Click on the videos below to see two brave pairs practising the first 10 questions...They did really well and with a little more practise to iron out a few grammatical errors, they're confident that they're going to reach the challenge!!
