Year 6

A massive thank you, to all of our supporters who came on Friday, to our Tombola, you helped us raise a whopping............. £988.56............. Thank you !

In Year 6 we learn a variety of topics. Here is a brief outline of the year ahead.

Autumn 1

We learn about keeping fit and healthy during this term, one of our topics is 'How I Am Alive' where we become scientists and research other scientists to give us a greater understanding of the human body, especially the circulatory system.

We will discuss whether we are 'Eco-Friendly', find out what we know about sustainable energy and how to walk to school safely.

We spend a whole week on road safety. A dedicated road safety company come in and through 'Bikeability' we will learn about the different road signs and how to stay safe on the roads, before going out on our bikes into the local area. We will then be presented with a Level 1 or Level 2 certificate, depending on our final ability.

Autumn 2

The majority of this term will be taken up talking chocolate. We will be learning the history of the modern day chocolate bar's humble beginnings as a spicy hot drink. Our topic will cover the Mayans and Aztecs as well as the journey from South America to Europe by Cortez.

We will read Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, before concentrating on more descriptive writing, stories, dialogue and character descriptions.

We will also be learning how live a healthy balanced lifestyle, where we will learn more about carbohydrates, sugar and fats. Looking at how much time we spend sleeping, eating and doing regular exercise.

Spring 1

We have an exciting term planned full of Dragons, Myths and Legends. We will be looking at St. George before creating our own poems and stories.

We will be looking at adaptation and evolution and how life finds its way.

Our WWII topic will see us venturing out to Duxford Imperial War Museum, we will be concentrating on how land warfare has changed over time, looking at a timeline of the Blitz and propaganda posters, to make us think how we might be inspired to fight for our country. We will be writing a diary entry of a child during the Blitz as well as a letter home from an evacuee.

Spring 2

During this half term we will be looking at animals that are kept in zoos and cages and coming up with arguments for and against. Which we will then discuss in the classroom further.

This half term will also see the start of our 'Booster' sessions in preparation for our SATs, at the beginning of May.

Summer 1 & 2

Will see us concentrating further on our foundation subjects, as well as transitioning into secondary school.
