Winter Wonderwear

As part of our end of term festivities, we have enjoyed participating in a ‘Winter Wonderwear’ project in Design and Technology. Each year group was challenged with a design brief to create a piece of winter themed head gear or hat to wear to our virtual end of term celebration.

Using a Wintery, Christmas, Festive, Party or Celebration theme, the pupils then designed and made some fabulous, festive hats which they modelled enthusiastically for the rest of the school in a virtual fashion show. Finally, we evaluated how successful we had been at fulfilling our design brief, knowing that even if there were improvements that could have been made, we all looked supremely stylish!

Reception

Bees

The Bees have been busy making their Christmas crowns.

The first thing they did was decide whether they wanted to make a robin or reindeer.

Then they assembled them and put them aside to dry. Next they cut out the shape of a crown along one edge of their panel and glued on jewels.

They then added glue to the opposite edge and sprinkled glitter over it.

Finally when it was all dry, they used sticky dots to put on their robin/reindeer.

Wasps

We have made a robin bird in a holly bush. The children cut out all their leaves and parts to their robins. They assembled their robins themselves and we helped to assemble the whole crown together. We scrunched the leaves to give them a 3D effect and added pom poms for the berries.

Year 1

We began by decorating our polystyrene ball using felt tips, card and felt. Then we got our headband and folded our pipe cleaners in half around the top of the headband. We made sure to pinch it tightly at the bottom so it didn't move and then we twisted both halves of the pipe cleaner together, so it was strong and firm. We then attached the decorated polystyrene ball to the end of the pipe cleaner, making sure it was on properly and didn't fall off.

Year 2

Badgers

Year 3

Dolphins

Here are the Dolphins’ ‘festive fascinators’! We had to do lots of curling of card and bending of wire to make our fascinators as big and as bold as we could make them! We based them on the Christmas story so we have some stars, some crowns, some halos and some sheep.

Sharks

Our Festive Fascinators based on a simple head band which we built up and extended out using a base, paper curling techniques, wire bending and finally by attaching shapes and sequins to complete the 3D look. Wearing the final products made us feel like we were ready for a trip to Ascot in all our finery.

Year 4

Papier mache caps.

We used papier mache and moulds to make the basic shape before decorating them in our own individual unique style.

Chimpanzees

Gorillas

Year 5

Y5 were challenged to make waterproof festive hats. We made detailed designs which included accurate measurements and annotations. Our hats were constructed using card strips to create the basic shape, then covered in brightly coloured acetate. All of the decorations we added were waterproof too so that we can party in them - even in the rain!

Year 6

Coming to a fashion show near you Year 6 Haute Couture...

Butterflies

Caterpillars

We were inspired by looking at a range of haute couture hats. We have used different paper crafts and techniques to design and make our hats. We chose bold colours to make the designs stand out.
