Y6 / Perse  Art History Project

Presenting Art History - 'A course to inspire'

For a second year, 12 year 6 pupils have taken part in a History of Art course organised in collaboration with The Perse Upper School. This Course uses Art and Art History to spark students’ curiosity, raise aspirations, stretch and support them in developing core skills, and enhance their confidence in other subjects across the curriculum and beyond the classroom. The pupils have attended a series of 90-minute engaging and fun workshops to coach and develop the following:

  • Creative and critical thinking
  • Personal expression
  • Public Speaking
  • Writing skills
  • Empowerment and confidence

Every week they have used 1 or 2 works of art as a focal point for the workshop, each session representing a new artistic ‘era’ or genre in order to give the students some overview of the History of Art over the course.  Students and mentors from The Perse School shared their thoughts and findings each week in a scrap book and they presented an overview of their experiences in an assembly to parents at the end of the course.

The children really enjoyed this experience and hopefully future year 6 pupils will have the same opportunity.

Poem:

At first we were nervous, unsure what to say,

Coming together one cold October day.

But slowly and surely we became friends,

And now we’re presenting right at the end.

We started our journey at the Museum of Archaeology,

And whilst we were there learnt a lot about Anthropology.

A fortnight later at Gonville and Caius,

We learnt all about painting and used some gold leaves.

The next stop on our visit was a trip to Kings,

With gargoyles and history, we learnt so many things.

Another place we visited was the Museum, Fitzwilliam,

Filled with armours and art works, numbering a billion.

Amongst all of these trips we did a number of classes,

We learnt about Paul Klee and Munch – The Masters.

We felts the importance of movement, running and diving,

But after all was said and done, it was nothing if not tiring!

So thank you for listening,

It’s been a real treat.

But now we must leave you,

And return to our seats!!
