Examples of children's work History and Geography

 

Year 1

Year 1 have been learning about the countries of the UK and in particular what it is like to live in Scotland. They also practised their map drawing skills. In addition, they have been comparing toys from the present and the past to see how they have changed over the years.

 

Year 1 have been learning all about how to find their way. They navigated around the school and re-traced a local journey on a map they have also been learning about the world's oceans.

Year 2

Year 2 have been learning more about life in the past by studying the Fire of London. They learnt about how the fire spread and looked at why they buildings of the time caught fire so easily. They also wrote diaries to help them think about what it would have been like to be there.

Year 2 have been exploring the past by looking at flight through the ages. They went on a trip to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and then produced timelines to show the history of flight.

Year 3

Year 3 have been learning about the ancient Egyptians. They acted as tomb raiders to find out more about Egyptian artefacts and they went to the Fitzwilliam Museum to learn about what Egyptians thought about the afterlife.

Year 4:

Year 4 have been studying South America and in particular the Amazon jungle. They have learnt about the different climate zones in the South American continent and the different habitats that are found in the Amazonian jungle. They have also thought about the effects of industry on the rainforest.

Year 4 have written poems about the Romans and produced biographies of Julius Caesar. They have also contacted our partnership school in Ghana, using Skype to talk to them 'live', and have written about what they have learnt about the Geography and culture of Ghana

Year 5

Year 5 have been investigating whether the stereotype of the bloodthirsty Viking warrior was fully deserved, using evidence to support their arguments. They have also been researching the different features of cities as a type of settlement, using London as a case study.

Year 5 have written poetry about Viking and Saxon life, using the Saxon kenning technique to give their poems extra detail and imagery.

Year 6

Year 6 have used their chocolate topic as an opportunity to study the ancient cultures of South and Central America. They have researched how the Aztecs and Mayans used chocolate, and also the effects of the Spanish conquistadors on South and Central American cultures. They also learnt about how the trade routes of the British Empire had a role to play in the history of chocolate.

Year 6 have been investigating the long and varied history of the Tower of London, writing reports of its historical phases and how its function has changed over time.
