Year 3

Cambridge Botanical Gardens

Year 3 enjoyed the visit from Bronwen, who works for the Cambridge Botanical Gardens. It was fascinating to find out about the world’s largest trees, seeds and flowers (as well as the smelliest!) and to handle and observe unusual species of plant from around the world. We particularly enjoyed learning about carnivorous plants like ‘The Monkey Cup’ plant and learning how they attract in insects (to eat for dinner!)

RE Day

We had a fantastic day learning about the Christmas Story, carrying out a carousel of activities to help us to understand, ask questions and express ourselves. We all loved acting out the Christmas Story, playing all of the parts; from Jacob and Mary to a evil King Herod and the farm animals in the stable! It was great to do some proper acting and to work together.

Science

Year 3 have loved exploring in Science in the Autumn Term.  We had a contest to see who could make their toy car go the furthest, finding out which surfaces cause the least friction.

Here are some examples of our Science recording and writing, which we are very proud of. We have learnt about how magnets work and what food groups humans need to stay alive.

Stone Age

Rock Cycle

In Year 3, we have been studying rocks and have become expert geologists! Just ask any of us what an igneous rock is and we’ll be able to tell you. We demonstrated our knowledge of how rocks can form using starburst sweets. You have to cut up the sweets to produce sediment then squish them together to make sedimentary rock. After that you apply heat and pressure, which turned our rock into metamorphic. Finally, we applied much more heat to melt the sweet (rock) and when this cooled, this formed igneous rock (fresh from a volcano!). Look at the pictures of us having a great time exploring science in a practical way.

Fantastic Writing!

Year 3 have written a range of different text types this term from adventure stories about hatching dinosaurs and newspaper articles about an escaped dinosaur around the school to volcano information texts and letters helping the 3 pigs build a stable house that the wolf can’t blow down. The children have worked tremendously hard to produce some fantastic writing and you can see some examples below.

Capacity Day

Year 3 worked outdoors, learning about capacity in a fun and practical way! They had 4 challenges, which they had to complete in groups, all of which involved using their mathematical reasoning skills and lots of water! It was great to be able to share the space with nursery and reception children and to use one of the many outdoor spaces in King’s Hedges.

Problem Solving

We carried out a problem solving activity called ‘Cubes Here and There’ from the NRICH website. Children had to use their logical reasoning ability to find as many different possibilities using a number of red and green cubes, whilst following specific rules.

Here’s the website if you’d like to carry on the learning: https://nrich.maths.org/6119
