Examples of children's RE work

Nativity

In December we had a display of more than 30 nativity sets representing different traditions and cultures from all around the world.
Children were invited to visit the collection with their teachers and choose a set that they would like to have in their own home and explain why.

Some children responded orally and others recorded their choice through writing.

Year 1

Year 1 looked at the question: How do the stories from the Gurus and the concept of Seva affect Sikh children?

Year 2

Work to reflect on Angels in the Nativity Story

The children looked at representations of angels. They observed features to draw their own interpretation of the features of angels.

Year 3

Year 3's Easter RE looked at these questions:

Why is the last supper important? Why do Christians believe that Jesus had to die?

Philosophy discussion about life after death, including understanding of what Christians believe about life after death.

Drama

Year 3 learned about Jesus’ crucifixion and the people involved in the event. We carried out a ‘whoosh’ circle, watched videos and observed paintings by different artists to give us inspiration. After that, we all decided on a character and created freeze frames of different scenes. We spoke about the emotions of the people involved and how people see things differently before bringing our pictures to life.

Philosophy

Year 3 also learnt the story of Christ’s resurrection and retold it through pictures and captions. We then discussed whether it is possible to ‘believe something without seeing it’ and came up with examples, justifying and sharing their opinions

Year 3 thought about the significance of the Jewish Shabbat and how they and their family spend a day of rest.

Year 3 used Whoosh circles as an engaging and interactive storytelling technique to bring the Nativity story alive, even without prior knowledge of the characters or plot. Children were asked to name all the examples of giving in The Christmas Story, and used their philosophy groups to discuss concept of giving.

Year 4

Philosophy and RE

Who would you talk to from the nativity story…what would you ask them?

Children chose a nativity character and completed a piece of artwork to represent their chosen individual. They had to put themselves in the role of a character to answer hot seated questions. They had to write questions that are appropriate for a chosen character.

These are some examples:

Angel

What is your favourite things about being an angel?                       How did you feel when you had to tell everyone about the baby? How nice is God?                                                                             How do you feel when you are with God?                                     Do you always do what God tells you to do?                                   Do you ever get tired?                                                                   What do you do up in heaven?                                                        Did you die or were you born as an angel?                                   How many humans have you spoken to?                                        What does God look like and what does he wear?                         Why did God choose you to be an angel?                                       Do you speak to God?                                                                   What is it like to fly, live in heaven and work for God?                     Why is Jesus so special?

Mary

How did you feel when you slept in the stable?

Did you feel happy that when you heard that you were the mother of God’s son?

Wise Men

Were you excited about Jesus being born?

Shepherd

What was it like meeting Jesus? Were you scared when you met Angel Gabriel?

Year 5

Year 5 considered the question: What do Hindus believe about the nature of god?

Year 6

Year 6 have looked at beliefs and actions in the world with the overall question of 'What key beliefs influence people's faith?' and 'How do people of faith live out their lives?' being considered.
