Year Five

Anglo-Saxons
This term we have been learning all about the Anglo-Saxons. Through writing, drama and design technology, we have learnt how they invaded Britain to claim the land as their own. We used a range of historical evidence to learn about Anglo-Saxon warriors and the weapons they used. We then designed and made our own wooden shields to frighten our enemies.

Hinduism
What can the stories and images of deities tell us about Hindu beliefs about God?
We read some of the fascinating Hindu stories about the Trimurtri (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva). We then identified the key moments or turning points in the story and thought about their feelings and thoughts. Using drama, we explored the different stories and their meaning. In English, we wrote about own beliefs in God and compared this to the beliefs of others. There were some interesting philosophical discussions about God’s existence and how His presence helps many people while in contrast do not believe in Him at all.

Bread
This term we have also learnt about the science behind bread. We conducted an experiment to see what conditions yeast needs to produce carbon dioxide, which helps bread to rise. We found out that yeast has a sweet tooth and needed sugar and warm water. Samuel’s dad then came in to share his expert baking knowledge and we all baked some delicious bread. After our experiment and baking, we used our new found knowledge to write a technical explanation of how yeast helps to make bread.

Code and Chips
We were very fortunate to have been given a free "hands-on" workshop on using the micro:bit and Raspberry Pi coding tools. For the second year running, ARM and HackLab had joined forces to bring us a day of technology workshops and exhibitions aimed at getting students from Years 4 to 8 skilled up and excited about a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). We had a great day trying out different types of coding and seeing coding in action.
